Kids Cook!

School may be out of session, but the long days of summer are the perfect time to learn about farming, cooking, and seasonal eating.

Children are developing the food preferences and eating habits that will stay with them for life. In these special classes developed for students entering 3rd, 4th, and 5th grades, kids will take part in hands-on activities that introduce them to the wonderful, colorful world of fresh produce and help them discover how to cook simple, seasonal dishes featuring farm ingredients.

Through visits to the mid-week Healdsburg Farmers’ Market and hands-on cooking activities, children will meet their local farmers, learn about the growing seasons of California, and become empowered to be healthy eaters. Each class will highlight a different seasonal ingredient and feature ways to prepare it in a healthy snack. In this relaxed and supportive environment, each child will be free to be open minded about learning how to engage their five senses and appreciate how to cook.

Class tickets may be purchased individually or as a series of three. Every class will be taught by Sue McQuiddy, an experienced teacher and garden coordinator who for the past eight years has integrated nutrition education and school gardening into classes that complement academics at Cali Calmécac Language Academy. She has received program training from Network for a Healthy California and Sonoma County School Garden Network, and planned and coordinated the volunteer building effort of a new 2,500 square foot community school garden at Cali that will produce its first vegetables for students to harvest this fall.
