Heritage Grain Alliance with Frances Moore Lappe

SHED is pleased and honored to welcome Frances Moore Lappé, the author or co-author of 18 books including the legendary Diet for a Small Planet, in a special event for the North Coast Heritage Grain Alliance, a non-profit that unites small farmers, millers, bakers, and brewers in restoring heritage grains into the North Coast foodshed.

Frances will speak from her latest book, World Hunger: Ten Myths, in which she draws on extensive new research to offer fresh and often startling insights about tough questions from climate change and population growth to genetically modified organisms (GMOs) and the role of U.S. foreign aid. Brimming with little-known but life-changing examples of solutions to hunger worldwide, this myth-busting book argues that sustainable agriculture can feed the world, that we can end nutritional deprivation affecting one-quarter of the world’s people, and that most in the Global North have more in common with hungry people than they thought. For novices and scholars alike, World Hunger: Ten Myths will inspire a whole new generation of hunger-fighters.

Frances was named by Gourmet Magazine as one of 25 people (including Thomas Jefferson, Upton Sinclair, and Julia Child), whose work has changed the way America eats. She is the cofounder of three organizations, including Oakland based think tank Food First and, more recently, the Small Planet Institute which she leads with her daughter Anna Lappé. Frances and her daughter have also cofounded the Small Planet Fund, which channels resources to democratic social movements worldwide.

The North Coast Heritage Grain Alliance is a non-profit uniting small farmers, millers, bakers, and brewers in restoring heritage grains into the North Coast foodshed. From ensuring no GMOs enter our food system to combating climate change and myriad health issues, heritage grains are the last link in building a sustainable, nutritious local food economy.
