Biointensive Gardening Workshop

Learn the philosophy and basics of biointensive gardening with instructor Stefen Stehling and get a practical education in sustainable cultivation practices from around the world that you can apply in your home garden.

This lecture and in-field workshop will begin in the SHED Grange with a  review of the history of agronomy and the development of biointensive gardening. Stefen will show how biointensive gardening, when practiced as a complete system, is a sustainable method of food production that improves soil fertility without the addition of fertilizers or soil amendments. An overview of the key components to the system will lead to an afternoon practicum of double digging instruction at Terrace Community Garden in Healdsburg.

The technique of double digging is one of fluid movement that minimizes the impact on the body and maximizes the efficiency of effort – a sort of Tai Chi with digging fork and spade. Please dress appropriately for working in the garden, and wear proper footwear and sun protection.

Please note that participants must provide their own transportation to the offsite practicum component of the workshop. There will be a one hour break for lunch and getting to the garden.

Stefan Stehling is a biointensive and permaculture instructor. Stefan studied with John Jeavons at Ecology Action, and shares his passion for soil biology, composting and ecological restoration with youth and adults alike. As both an educator at a Santa Rosa Elementary School and member of the Compost Club, he is involved in outreach and teaches science, gardening and composting in Sonoma County schools. He is the founder of ROOTS Solutions, LLC, a company focused on biological technologies to protect our soil and water resources.

Student scholarships are available for this workshop. Please inquire with Rick Kaye at compostclub@gmail.com for more information.
