The Art of Creative Pruning with Jake Hobson of Niwaki
We are pleased to welcome pruning specialist and topiary expert, Jake Hobson, for a talk about the aspects of creative pruning in our modern grange. The founder of Niwaki Garden Tools in the U.K., Jake is a keen advocate of the hands-on approach, enjoying the physical act of pruning as much as the aesthetic results of it. The discussion will explore the techniques of western topiary and Japanese cloud pruning and how he has blended them together in what he calls organic topiary. He will talk engagingly not just about pruning techniques but also the correct tool to choose for each job. Finally, he will lead a demonstration on how to clean and sharpen your garden tools.
Jake Hobson studied sculpture at the Slade School of Fine Art in London, and from there his interest in how people relate to and perceive nature took him to Japan, where he developed a healthy obsession with their gardens and tree pruning techniques, training at a tree nursery in Osaka. Back home in England, Jake founded his business Niwaki, introducing Japanese tripod ladders and fine pruning tools to the western world, and lectures and demonstrates Japanese pruning techniques and what he calls creative pruning, a landscape-inspired fusion of styles that covers traditional European topiary, Japanese pruning and cloud pruning, as well as fruit tree, agricultural and woodland pruning. It’s aimed at inspiring people to loosen up and welcome new ideas into their gardens, incorporating diverse elements for, celebrating the subtleties and the impact that sculptural forms can make.
Workshop participants will receive a 10% off coupon for purchases in the SHED retail store the day of the event, perfect on stocking up on Niwaki tools and other supplies.
